PartyPaloozaNW - ROOTS
Our favorite charitable organization is ROOTS, which stands for
Rising Out of the Shadows.
ROOTS is a homeless shelter for Teens
and Young Adults in the University District of Seattle.  Their website
address is:
http://www.rootsinfo.org/

ROOTS serves homeless individuals between the ages of 18 and 25
and is the only shelter in Seattle specifically addressing the needs of
homeless young adults.  These young people are too old to access
youth shelter programs but often feel unwelcome or threatened in
emergency programs serving older single adults. Current estimates
suggest that there are ore than one and a half million children, teens
and young adults trying to survive on U.S. streets today

Homeless youth come from every socio-economic and racial group in
America.  More often than not, youth who are homeless have not
chosen to live on the streets.  Many homeless youth turn to the
streets because of a combination of abuse, family problems and
dysfunction within their home that causes them to feel unsafe.

ROOTS services include: clean bedding and sheets; dinner and hot
breakfast; health and hygiene supplies and services, including
laundry and showers; on-site case management and referral to other
support and transitional services; visits by health care providers,
including public health nurse and acupuncturist; educational materials
related to risk avoidance, harm reduction and other area programs;
supportive and nurturing relationships between program staff and
guests.

ROOTS is located in the heart of the University District, in the
basement of the University Temple United Methodist Church at 1415
NE 43rd Street.

ROOTS is a member of the University District Service Provider
Alliance (UDSPA).   The University District Service Providers Alliance is
a coalition of agencies working together to create a comprehensive
continuum of services for homeless and street-involved youth and
young adults.  The purpose of the UDSPA is to help member
nonprofits share resources and work together efficiently as we
puruse the shared mission of offering a full spectrum of
compassionate, quality care to Seattle's homeless and street-
involved youth and young adults.  For more information, visit

If you would like to volunteer at
ROOTS, visit their website for more
information and schedule attendance at a Volunteer Orientation
which are held every Monday evening.  It is also recommended that
you attend the
Homelessness 101 class that is put on by the
UDSPA.  The class provides a valuable introduction to the
perceptions, issues and causes of youth and young adult
homelessness.  Its a real eye-opener and well worth the time!
